ABOUT GLOBAL MEDICAL TRAINING

"Wherever the art of medicine is loved, there is also a love of humanity." — Hippocrates

Global Medical Training (GMT) is an international, non-profit, and humanitarian organization that works to improve access to medical care in resource-poor Latin American communities. We partner with health professionals living in these communities to offer free medical clinics for individuals lacking consistent access to care. Students are given the unique chance to directly participate in diagnoses and treatment plans under physician supervision. Student volunteers develop valuable clinical skills and learn about health systems in developing countries, equipping them to become effectors of change in the field of global health.

At the same time, GMT maintains its commitment to ethical principles and sustainable community support. Student volunteers undergo comprehensive training in both clinical skills and global health ethics and act within the boundaries of their student role. Since GMT has chapters at universities across the U.S., physicians and staff in each region are able to return to each community every few weeks with a group of student volunteers, which has allowed GMT to build a sustained and trusting relationship with each community. In order to most effectively impact health, we work toward disease prevention by offering comprehensive health education. To improve quality of life, we also carry out public health projects in each community we visit, including installing water filters that provide ten years of clean water.

GMT at UCLA is committed to the following principles of excellence:

  • Compassion

  • Continuous hands-on learning

  • Sustainability

  • Ethics and cultural competence

  • Community support

  • Teamwork

We invite you to join us in our mission to improve human health worldwide!
